After the amendment of the prison law in Berlin, three transgender inmates have so far been transferred from the men’s to the women’s prison. This emerges from a response from the Senate to a parliamentary question by the AfD.
A conference in which representatives of the medical and psychological services and the security department are involved is discussing the corresponding transfer, according to the Senate Justice Department.
The Berlin House of Representatives passed an amendment to the prison laws last September. This gives transgender, intersex and non-binary people the opportunity to have a say in whether they go to male or female prisons.
Imprisonment poses a major challenge for transgender people, since the inmates may have reservations and the person concerned may have obstacles. “This results in an increased maintenance effort,” it said.
