Why Klim Voroshilov was against the celebration of red Army Day on 23 February

History 22/02/20 Why Klim Voroshilov was against the celebration of red Army Day on 23 February

Today, the defender of the Fatherland Day is an official holiday. Celebrated this holiday in the Soviet Union. However, when he was called otherwise, and on February 23 was considered the birthday of the red Army. That’s just the Kliment Voroshilov was opposed to the establishment of the date, saying that it is completely “random”.

the history of the holiday

It is now the defender of the Fatherland Day is the official holiday, and the first red Army Day was planned as a one-off event promotional. Similar holidays then enough: during the formation of the new government were necessary. At least so say the authors of the publication “the Big book of holidays greetings” V. Leszczynski and A. Malyshev. The first feast dedicated to the anniversary of the red Army, in Soviet Russia, noted in 1919. But then on the memorable date forgot. So, in 1920 and 1921 no celebrations on this occasion did not pass.

in 1922, However, on the Day of the red Army remembered again. If you believe Alex Gromov, author of the book “the people’s Commissar Frunze”, in January this year, was released the decree of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee, which read: “In accordance with the resolution of the IX all-Russian Congress of Soviets about the red Army, the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee draws the attention of the Executive Committee for the upcoming anniversary of the red Army.” In the document in parentheses were specified and the exact date – February 23. Next, 1923, the Day the red Army began to celebrate in a big way.

the Point of view of Commissar

However, not everyone agreed with the adoption of this February day, as the date of birth of the red Army. So, Kliment Voroshilov, people’s Commissar for military and naval Affairs of the USSR, in 1935, that is after some years after the red Army Day became a real celebration, suddenly announced that “Dating pprazdnestva anniversary of the red army 23 February is rather random and difficult to explain nature and does not coincide with historical dates.” As written by Armen Gasparyan in his book “Russia in the fire of Civil war: the true story of the most terrible fratricidal war,” Voroshilov expressed my opinion through the press in one of the festive articles.

Klim Voroshilov then hinted at events that occurred at the end of January 1918. As indicated in the 3 volume edition of “history of the Civil war in the USSR” (Ed. Commission volume: Naida S. F., Ovechkin G. D., Petrov Y. P., Struchkov A. A., Shatalin N. I.), on 27 January of the year the question of the establishment of the red Army was brought up for discussion the soldiers ‘ section of the III all-Russian Congress of Soviets. Soldiers have supported the project. The next day, i.e. on 28 January, Vladimir Lenin edited the decree, after which the document was adopted by the CPC. February 14, 1918 the decree “About the organization of the workers and peasants red fleet” was published.

the Opinion of Stalin and the historians

3 years after the Declaration of Voroshilov, Joseph Stalin managed to justify the approved date of the celebration of the anniversary of the red Army from a historical point of view. In 1938 was published the textbook “a short history of the CPSU(b)”, which was compiled with the direct participation of the leader. How was the tutorial, and also some modern editions (for example, “Cleansing. Why did Stalin beheaded his army?”, Viktor Suvorov), during the First World war, the Germans marched on Petrograd. The enemy is being blocked by lake Peipsi, which can be worked around in two ways: through through Pskov and Narva. However, on 23 February 1918 the army under the command of Pavel Dybenko gave the Germans a decisive rebuff.

However, not all historians agree that events occurred that way. So, V. L. Karnatsevich in his book “500 famous historical events” mentions a version according to which on 23 February 1918 at Narva troops under the command of Pavel Dybenko, opposite shamefully retreated. Ppodtverjdeniem this version is the fact that in March of the same year, Dybenko was removed from all posts and expelled from the party for leaving Narva. Although, according to Karnatsevich, it is believed that on the day that was the Day the red Army, did not happen any more or less significant for the history of the event.
