The federal government has announced a package of measures against the increasing shortage of skilled workers. Decisions will be made in the fall, said Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil on Tuesday at the sidelines of the cabinet meeting in Meseberg, Brandenburg.
“We will launch a comprehensive strategy for skilled workers.” Further training should be further developed and “supplementary immigration of skilled workers” should be ensured “with modern immigration law”, said the SPD politician.
The subject of training will be tackled with a training guarantee. In their coalition agreement, the traffic light parties had agreed on such a guarantee.
The trade unions have been demanding the instrument for a long time and refer to Austria. There, all young people who cannot find an apprenticeship in a company are guaranteed an external training place.
“There are companies that are desperately looking for workers,” said Heil. The task will not get any smaller in the next few years. It is important to address this task with business and trade unions.
“We have set ourselves the goal of really hammering in the first pegs this year so that we can also start implementing it,” said Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger. She referred to the training figures and expressed concern that they could stagnate at the Corona level.
