Mikhail Gorbachev will be buried in Moscow on Saturday. While it is still completely unclear in view of the current political situation whether foreign politicians will be able to pay their last respects to the former Soviet head of state at the Novodevichy Cemetery, Berlin has ordered mourning flags to be displayed on Saturday.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner Gorbachev is also an honorary citizen of Berlin. “We would like to appropriately honor the services of our honorary citizen Mikhail S. Gorbachev for the political change in the GDR,” said Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD). “By signing the Two Plus Four Treaty, he paved the way to German reunification and a united Berlin.”
