The Berlin Office for the Protection of the Constitution expects that inflation and rising energy prices will lead to more protests by radicals in the fall.
It is already apparent that “enemies of the constitution want to use the issues of energy supply and combating pandemics for themselves and their goals and are trying to agitate against democratic institutions,” explained Torsten Akmann (SPD), State Secretary of the interior administration responsible for the protection of the Constitution, on Monday in the Berlin House of Representatives .
“We expect activities from the right-wing extremist spectrum, from Reich citizens and the so-called state delegitimizers,” Akmann continued. He listed various publications in which right-wing extremists had called for “targeting the totalitarian party state” or even “disposing of the system”.
Not least because of these announcements and in view of the experiences in connection with the protests against the corona measures imposed by the federal and state governments, according to Akmann, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution sees “the potential for growth and radicalization, especially in the spectrum of state delegitimizers and the right-wing extremist scene”. , he continued.

Akmann qualified: “Whether and to what extent this potential can be activated cannot be reliably predicted at the present time. I don’t see any unrest in autumn and winter in Berlin at the moment.” However, it is to be expected that Reich citizens and state delegitimizers in particular will use the infrastructure built up in the course of the corona protests to organize and mobilize marches or the like, Akmann said, adding: “We have to reckon with large-scale demonstrations here in Berlin.”
According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the situation within the left-wing extremist scene is less dynamic. It is most likely that their supporters will take part in protests against marches or gatherings organized by right-wing extremists and that there will be clashes as a result, Akmann said. So far, there have only been very few calls for protests against rising energy prices, and there are currently no signs of such campaigns.
