The President of the Conference of Ministers of Education, Karin Prien (CDU), sees a need for improvement in the Infection Protection Act with regard to schools.
The politician criticized, for example, that the draft ruled out a mask requirement for the first to fourth graders. “I don’t think that’s a smart approach,” Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Education told Deutschlandfunk on Sunday.
There are many regulations in this draft that would have to be revised again. For this reason, the KMK President also invited the federal and state health ministers to a joint conference with the education ministers.
Health Minister Lauterbach promised this coordination between the departments in June, but did nothing in this direction, which is why she has now issued this invitation in her role as KMK President.
Nevertheless, Prien is confident that schools can remain open in autumn and winter despite the corona pandemic. One should “never say never”, but fortunately there is a broad political consensus that Germany should no longer go its own way. The summer holidays in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania end on Monday – in North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous state, they had already ended last week.
