It’s only been three matchdays in the Bundesliga, but the championship is – at least it feels – taken again. FC Bayern is shooting its way through the league with ease even without world footballer Robert Lewandowski, who has moved to Barcelona, and conceded seven goals to VfL Bochum on Sunday evening without having played outstandingly.

In the table they are only two points ahead of Borussia Mönchengladbach, the designated main competitor from Dortmund is only three points behind.

But the feeling says something completely different: Bayern are playing in their own league – and a look at the goal difference confirms that.

A team has never started the season with three wins and 15:1 goals. You have to add up the goal differences of the first six “chasers” to surpass those of Munich. It is highly unlikely that there will be any real tension at the top of the Bundesliga for the eleventh year in a row.

Nevertheless, the whole thing has a certain attraction for the viewers. Like the famous Harlem Globetrotters’ traveling basketball circus, Bayern’s games have turned into an entertaining show. Every few minutes, the exceptional talents on the offensive show their tricks.

The sheer mass of goals and great opportunities also counteracts a problem. For several years we have heard that many young people no longer have the patience to follow a 90-minute football match and only watch the highlights. Bayern’s performances recently looked like a single, long highlight video.

And FC Bayern is not without tension either. After all, there are still enough records – mostly their own – that the team can break. And Munich have not won in double digits for 51 years. With the current dominance, it’s really only a matter of time before that changes.
