According to estimates by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of migrants who have drowned or gone missing in the Mediterranean has risen to around 1,200 in the first half of 2022. The organization announced this on Friday in Athens.
In addition, dozens of people have been missing since Wednesday after a boat sank south of the Greek island of Rhodes, it said.
A boat about 15 meters long with migrants on board leaked and sank on Wednesday. So far 34 people have been rescued; 29 from the Greek and five from the Turkish coast guard, said the UNHCR in Athens.
Since the rescued gave different information about the number of people on board the submerged boat, it is feared that many people have drowned.
