Already during the system test and before a final approval notice from the factory in Grünheide, the electric car group Tesla built vehicles and individual parts there for test purposes.

The US group received the last partial approval for this in January 2022, which agreed to the production of 2000 test vehicles. However, it was clear from the start: All products may only be used for internal purposes or subsequently scrapped.

Specifically, the first edition of the State Environment Agency said: “The parts and bodies produced during the system tests may not be used as goods for sale.” Tesla must document what happens to the test phase vehicles and prove scrapping.

Now there is apparently a reversal: the test cars are now allowed to end up on the open market. The Brandenburg State Office for the Environment confirmed this to rbb.

The planned sale of the test vehicles became public after a citizen requested access to the state government’s files. The documents show that Tesla now intends to sell the test cars to customers after all.

The automaker has since justified the decision. All previous partial approvals have become superfluous since an approval notice was issued for the factory in Grünheide on March 4th, 2022. The corresponding vehicles have also been extensively improved.

The State Environment Agency does not accuse Tesla – on the contrary. A spokesman told rbb: “Tesla is free to process bodies that were created during the period of testing the operational capability and to sell them if they are marketable.” The car manufacturer does not violate the requirements of the authority. Waste can even be avoided in terms of the immission control permit.
