(Montreal) A driver lost his life Wednesday evening on Highway 20 East in the Chaudière-Appalaches region as freezing rain made road conditions very difficult over much of the province.

The swerve of his van occurred around 5:20 p.m. near the municipality of Laurier-Station.

“The police officers of the MRC de Lotbinière were called regarding a van that swerved and ended up on the roof in the central reservation,” explained Sergeant Béatrice Dorsainville, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec. Quebec (SQ).

The man in his 60s was trapped in his vehicle and rescue pliers had to be used to extricate him.

“He suffered very serious injuries and unfortunately his death was pronounced a little later in the evening,” said Sergeant Dorsaiville.

Two other passengers were inside the vehicle, but these people were not injured.

“A police officer in collision investigation has made the analysis of the scene […] He (driver) possibly lost control of the vehicle for a reason which is possibly related to the weather conditions at that time”, specified the door- word of the SQ.

The identity of the victim was not immediately released.
