Christian Selig, who used to be the brain behind the cool Reddit app Apollo, is now jumping on board as an advisor for the new version of Digg. The OG Digg founder Kevin Rose and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian decided to team up and give Digg a new lease on life. They used to be rivals back in the day when Digg and Reddit were going head-to-head in the internet game.
By bringing Selig into the mix, Rose and Ohanian are making it clear that they’re ready to shake things up. Selig made waves when he stood up against Reddit’s crazy API pricing in 2023, which basically killed off free apps like Apollo. He dropped a bomb on Reddit users by saying he needed $1.7 million a month to keep Apollo running smoothly under the new pricing. RIP Apollo, the Reddit community was not happy.
Digg is on a mission to make the internet fun again, instead of drowning in AI-generated nonsense. They’re not quite open to the public yet, but they’re testing the waters with an early-access program called “Groundbreakers.” You gotta pay a $5 fee to join and keep the bots out, with the proceeds going to nonprofits chosen by the Digg community.
Mezzell, the Digg CEO, is hyped to have Selig on the team. He’s got big plans to build something that’s not just cool to use, but also feels good to be a part of. Mezzell threw a little shade at Reddit’s API drama, but he’s keeping it real by saying they’re charting their own path at Digg. No need for the drama, they’re focused on the future.
