A 20-year-old woman has been shot dead in New York while pushing a three-month-old baby in a stroller. The incident happened on Wednesday evening (local time) on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, police said.

The perpetrator – a man in a black hoodie – fired a single shot and then fled. The woman was pronounced dead a little later in a hospital. The baby is unharmed. The police have started the investigation, but the background to the crime was initially unknown.

“We lost a 20-year-old woman on the Upper East Side tonight,” Mayor Eric Adams wrote on Twitter. “More guns in our city means more lives lost.”
