In the debate about a possible reintroduction of compulsory military service, FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr called on Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) to approach reservists.

“The Bundeswehr reserve needs a clear signal that it is needed. Together with the active ones, we would have a potential of over a million soldiers,” Dürr told the newspapers of the Funke media group.

Pistorius had repeatedly discussed the introduction of compulsory military service or military service in Germany. He also brought up the Swedish model, in which all young people are mustered, but enlistment is primarily voluntary. Dürr, however, called on the Defense Minister to now specifically address reservists.

Many in the reserve now wanted to contribute, but no offer was made to them. “I can’t understand that, after all, these people have already joined the Bundeswehr and bring with them professional expertise that is certainly needed in many areas, such as IT,” Dürr told the Funke newspapers.
