A survey of 700 public sector employees has sobering results: 81 percent of them are dissatisfied with their jobs.

There is dissatisfaction in the German public service. “Business Insider” reports exclusively on a recent survey by the Bavarian Civil Service Association (BBB), which shows that the majority of government employees do not see their employer as attractive or only partially attractive.

An overwhelming proportion of all respondents, 81 percent, are of the opinion that the civil service is becoming less attractive as an employer. Although employees value job security, flexible working hours and the part-time and home office options, 558 of the 700 respondents demand better pay, according to Business Insider.

The proportion of people who would like less bureaucracy and better technical equipment in the workplace is similarly large. Almost half of those surveyed also said that overtime has become the norm and that there is a noticeable shortage of skilled and young talent.

This picture of the public sector contrasts with job satisfaction in the wider working world in Germany. In April, the “Spiegel” magazine presented the “Work Happiness Report”, according to which eight out of ten employees describe themselves as happy in their jobs. This job happiness is felt particularly by those who work a four-day week.

Although the majority of those surveyed said they were happy in their current job, a third regularly thought about quitting. In addition, happiness at work depends heavily on the respective industry. Thanks to its high flexibility and innovation in work approaches, the tech industry is ahead, while healthcare and the financial sector generally record lower happiness levels.
