From July 6th to 31st, 2022, the 13th European Football Championship for Women will take place in England. 16 teams compete against each other in four groups to secure the trophy and millions in prize money.

Actually, the European Championship for women should already take place in 2021. As a result of the corona pandemic, however, the men’s European Championship and the Olympic Games were postponed from 2020 to 2021. As a result, the women’s European Championship also had to be rescheduled so that it did not collide with the other major sporting events.

The preliminary round started with the opening match between England and Austria in Manchester on July 6th at 9 p.m. The kick-off times for the individual games were always set at 6 p.m. or 9 p.m. German time.

In the preliminary round, the German women were initially used in three games.

With this year’s host country England, football is coming back home in 2022 – at least if the song “Three Lions” is to be believed. After 2005, the women’s European Football Championship is now being held on English turf for the second time.

The cities of London, Manchester, Sheffield, Leigh and Rotherham were chosen as venues. The size of this year’s venues varies greatly: while the team’s home stadium “Manchester City” can only hold 7,000 spectators, the legendary Wembley Stadium in London can hold a total of 90,000 fans.

Incidentally, the opening match will take place at Old Trafford (also known as the Theater of Dreams) in Manchester – the home of Manchester United.

The final of the 2022 European Football Championship is scheduled to take place on July 31 at 6 p.m. German time. The legendary Wembley Stadium was chosen as the venue, where on July 30, 1966 in the World Cup final between Germany and England, probably the most controversial final goal of all time was scored. The men’s European Championship final took place in this stadium in 2021.

Even before the first game kicked off, each of the 16 teams was guaranteed an entry fee of at least 600,000 euros. For example, 100,000 euros will be paid for a group win. The title of runner-up brings a team 420,000 euros, the winning title a full 660,000 euros. Overall, a team at the women’s European Football Championship can generate a maximum amount of more than 2 million euros.

That’s twice as much as in the early days of women’s football, but only a fraction of what male teams can earn at the European Championship. For comparison: At the 2021 men’s European Football Championship, a team could at best earn 28,250,000 euros – the maximum amount for women in 2022 is 2,085,000 euros.

Teams from 16 countries will compete against each other at this year’s Women’s European Football Championship:

England (as host country), Austria, Norway, Northern Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Netherlands, Sweden, Portugal, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium and Iceland.

At the end of February, Russia was excluded from UEFA as a participating country as a result of the war of aggression against Ukraine. As a replacement, Portugal was able to secure the vacant place.
