The food industry has proposed a model for the label for sugar, fat and salt in ready-made products. This work visually and facilitates the consumers with the choice, said the President of the peak Association of the German Federation for food law and Food science (BLL), Stephan Nießner, Deutsche Presse-Agentur. The model will be supported by the majority of the economy. On the front of the Package it is supposed to represent the content of nutrients and number of Calories – but with the controversial traffic light colors Red, Yellow and Green.

Specifically, the model consists of five circles, in which the number of Calories, as well as the content of fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt per 100 grams are presented. Similar as in the case of a pie chart, a highlighted area shows in each circle, how much percentage of the daily feed consumption of 100 grams means – the more, the larger the area. This colored area is supposed to be in the slightly larger circle to the number of Calories – light blue, the other purple. The Basis is an EU-wide fixed reference quantity of a total of 2,000 calories per day for an average built adult.

The BLL declared that his model should represent at a glance the importance and contribution of the product to the daily diet. It is the food not to evaluate but, as this would be with traffic light colors of the case.

the CDU and the SPD want to work according to the coalition agreement until the summer of 2019, a model in which the nutritional content “is optionally visualized simplified”. The Federal food Minister, Julia Klöckner (CDU) wants to examine possible new color markings.
