The number of Covid 19 cases in Brazil has risen again significantly in recent weeks. The Brazilian Ministry of Health reported 41,273 new infections within 24 hours on Thursday. Two weeks earlier the number had been 10,415.

In view of the approaching winter in the southern hemisphere, epidemiologists are already talking about the beginning of a fourth wave.

“This increase can be explained by the end of indoor mask-wearing, the onset of the cold season, the emergence of omicron subvariants, and the low uptake of booster vaccinations,” said Epidemiologist at Espíritu Santo University, Ethel Maciel.

The number of deaths on Thursday was 127, only slightly higher than in previous weeks. However, the Sao Paulo state government again recommended the use of masks indoors as the number of hospital admissions for Covid patients more than doubled in May.
