With a view to the summer, many Berlin districts expect significantly more garbage in their parks. “In general, it can be expected that the revival of tourism and the misconduct of Berlin users will result in a scenario similar to that of recent years,” said Almut Neumann, district councilor in Berlin-Mitte.

In several parks, large parties last year called the police into action.

A spokeswoman for the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district said that when temperatures rise and many tourists and Berliners flock to the parks, more pollution can be expected again. The cleaning costs in 2021 in the parks and green areas of the district had increased to around 666,300 euros (2020: 619,600 euros).

In Treptow-Köpenick, the cost of waste disposal was EUR 63,000 by mid-May – around EUR 10,000 more than in the same period last year. “As can already be seen from the expenditure compared to 2021, a further increase must also be expected this year,” said a spokeswoman.

According to the districts, to-go products such as coffee mugs and beer bottles or disposable packaging are usually thrown away.
