Ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) is currently visiting Washington. “I can confirm that former Chancellor Dr. Merkel is currently in post-office political talks in Washington D.C. stops,” said a spokeswoman for the former Chancellor on Wednesday at the request of the German Press Agency in Berlin.

Merkel has been in Washington since Monday and will return to Berlin on Thursday. No further details were initially given.

Former US President Barack Obama had previously published a photo on Twitter showing him and Merkel visiting a museum in Washington. As president, he saw how Merkel led through crises with her wise pragmatism, her good humor and her unrelenting moral compass, Obama wrote in the short message service.

He added, “And I feel lucky to call her a friend.” He is grateful for the opportunity to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

At the G7 summit in Elmau, Bavaria, the heads of state and government recalled a memorable photo of Merkel and Obama. They gathered at the weekend on the legendary wooden bench from which an iconic picture of Merkel and Obama was taken in front of Elmau Castle in 2015. Seven years ago, Obama sat in the middle of the bench and spread his arms very casually on the backrest, while Merkel also stood in front of him with her arms outstretched.
