Almost a year after a massive attack on a man who was accompanied by his twelve-year-old daughter, the trial against the alleged perpetrator has begun.

The 41-year-old is said to have thrown beer bottles at the then 39-year-old father in a park in Berlin-Charlottenburg, kicked him and seriously injured him with knife wounds. The victim suffered permanent facial injuries and lost sight in one eye. The defense attorney announced on Wednesday before the Berlin Regional Court that his client would testify at a later date.

The prosecutor charged the 41-year-old with dangerous and serious bodily harm and serious robbery. He brought the 39-year-old to the ground on the evening of August 11, 2021, stabbed his head and body several times with a knife and stole a mobile phone from the victim’s trouser pocket, according to the indictment.

The father suffered cuts on his face, neck and chest, among other things.

Passers-by are said to have discovered the alleged perpetrator shortly thereafter with a blood-smeared face and alerted the police. Emergency services also found the seriously injured man nearby, the police said at the time.

The 41-year-old was considerably under the influence of alcohol when he spoke to his father and suddenly attacked him. He then sent his daughter home to protect her.
