AstraZeneca and Biontech/Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccines have been most commonly used to vaccinate world leaders for the first time. This was the result of an analysis by the Berlin School of Business and Innovation (BSBI), in which media and official announcements from 108 countries were evaluated.
There is less knowledge about second and further vaccinations because they were made public much less frequently, said the private business school in Berlin. Official information on this was only recorded by almost 30 percent of politicians in the study.
Data from 174 heads of state and government from 108 selected countries were evaluated for the study. The BSBI team examined the vaccination status of the heads of state and government using media reports, press photos, social media channels and official press portals of the respective governments. If no information was found, the heads of state were counted as “unvaccinated”. If the information was inconsistent, the vaccination status was marked as “unclear”.
The AstraZeneca vaccine was used most frequently for the initial vaccination of top politicians at 29 percent, closely followed by Biontech/Pfizer at 26 percent. The Chinese vaccine Sinopharm came third with eight percent. Sputnik V and Sinovac follow with five percent each.

The vaccines from AstraZeneca and Biontech/Pfizer were mainly used by top European politicians. In contrast, only heads of government on the continents of Africa, Asia and South America opted for Sputnik V. The preparation from the vaccine manufacturer Sinovac is also in the lead in Asia and South America. Information on the availability of alternatives at the time of vaccination was not given in the BSBI communication.
Of the 174 heads of state and government examined, 23 are women. At 79 percent, their recorded vaccination participation is slightly higher than that of 76 percent for men. Overall, over 76 percent of top politicians have at least had their first vaccination.
