Look, I’ve Had It
It was about three months ago, over coffee at the place on 5th, when my friend Marcus—let’s call him that, he’d hate the exposure—leaned in and said, “You gotta check out this new AI, it’s gonna change everything.” I rolled my eyes so hard I’m surprised they didn’t get stuck. Honestly, I’m so tired of this hype cycle. Every other week it’s something new, something “revolutionary.” And look, I’ve been in this game since the dial-up days, I’ve seen it all.
I remember back in ’98, some guy named Dave at a conference in Austin was going on about how “the internet is gonna be huge.” And yeah, he was right. But not every prediction is a home run. Remember when everyone thought Google Glass was gonna be the next big thing? Yeah, me neither.
AI Is Overhyped
Don’t get me wrong, I think AI is kinda cool. It’s done some amazing things, no doubt. But it’s not the be-all-end-all. It’s not gonna replace journalists, or doctors, or teachers. At least not anytime soon. And frankly, the way people are throwing around the term “AI” like it’s some magic wand is just… I mean, it’s completley ridiculous.
I was talking to a colleague named Sarah last Tuesday, and she was going on about how AI is gonna “revolutionize” her industry. I asked her what she meant, and she said, “Well, it’s gonna make everything more efficient.” I said, “Sarah, have you seen the transport infrastructure news update lately? Because that’s what real efficiency looks like.” She just stared at me. Which… yeah. Fair enough.
Anecdote Time
So, last year I was at this tech summit in Seattle, right? And there was this panel on AI, and one of the speakers—some guy with a startup that’s probably gonna fail in six months—said, “AI is the future.” And I raised my hand and said, “But what about the present? What about the people who are gonna lose their jobs because of this tech?” And the room just went silent. I mean, it was awkward. But someone had to say it.
And that’s the thing, nobody’s talking about the committment we need to make to help people adapt. It’s all just “look at this shiny new toy.” It’s like we’re kids in a candy store, and the candy is potentially disruptive technology.
Let’s Talk About the Real Issues
So, I’m not saying AI is bad. I’m saying we need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. We need to think about the ethical implications, the societal impact, the actual practical applications. Not just the hype.
And while we’re at it, let’s talk about the fact that AI is still kinda dumb. I mean, have you tried talking to one of those chatbots? It’s like talking to a particularly dense parrot. They can string words together, but they don’t understand context. They don’t understand nuance. They don’t understand humanity.
I get it, it’s exciting. It’s new. It’s shiny. But so was the Pet Rock. And look how that turned out.
In Defense of Being a Cynic
I know what you’re thinking. “Oh, here comes the old man yelling at the cloud.” But hear me out. I’ve seen this movie before. I’ve seen the hype, the crash, the cleanup. And I’m not gonna sit here and pretend that this time is different.
I’m not saying we should ignore AI. I’m saying we should be smart about it. We should be critical. We should ask questions. We should demand answers. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about the technology. It’s about the people.
And that’s all I have to say about that. For now.
