The Berliner Sabine Lisicki missed the leap into the main draw at the lawn tournament in Berlin. The former Wimbledon finalist lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-7 (7-9) to Australia’s Daria Saville, number 104 in the women’s world rankings, in the second qualifying round on Sunday. Lisicki will not be there in her hometown when the tennis event really starts this Monday.

“I gave everything. I also wanted to win, but these days cost me a lot emotionally,” said Lisicki after her defeat. On Saturday, the 32-year-old had won against Asia Muhammad from the USA 6: 4, 6: 4 at the start of the qualification. After that, the Berliner, who is fighting to return to her former glory after many injuries, could not suppress tears of emotion. “The emotions were just too great,” she said. After the successful opening match, she was able to fulfill many autograph requests in the stands and was full of optimism before her second appearance on Sunday, which she was only able to balance in the second set.
