(Montreal) A 78-year-old man lost his life Monday in a Montreal hospital after being injured in a fire in a three-unit building in the borough of Verdun.

The news was confirmed by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM). Investigators from the SPVM arson squad will try to shed light on what happened.

The fire reportedly started around 5 a.m. Monday at the building on Bannantyne Avenue at the intersection of Stephens Street.

Firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department (SSIM) brought the flames under control fairly quickly; they would have originated in the basement, for a reason that was still unknown at the end of the morning.
