(Washington) At least 24 people have died in the south, east-central and eastern United States as tornadoes and severe storms ripped homes and businesses to pieces, authorities said.

Tennessee has reported nine deaths due to severe weather, all of which occurred in McNairy County, east of Memphis, county mayor Larry Smith told local broadcaster WREG on Saturday.

They add to the 15 victims recorded in Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama, in the South, as well as those in Indiana and Illinois, in the middle east of the country and in Delaware on the East coast.

In Delaware, a “structure collapse” in Sussex County left one dead Saturday night, according to the local rescue center, as weather services also warned neighboring states like Pennsylvania and New York State against high winds and potential tornadoes.
