(OTTAWA) Peel police said Thursday they are investigating a theft of more than $20 million worth of gold and valuables from Toronto airport earlier this week.

The gold and these very expensive objects arrived Monday evening by plane and were unloaded and placed in a logistics hangar, said Stephen Duivesteyn, a police official, before their absence was noted shortly after. .

“The container containing these valuables was stolen with illegal means from the storage space,” he said at a press conference.

He gave no information on the modus operandi or on any suspect.

“Our investigators are keeping all leads open,” he told reporters, adding that such “very rare” mischief had no impact on passenger traffic.

According to the Toronto Sun, more than 1.6 tonnes of gold evaporated from the airport, which would be much more than the $20 million quoted by authorities.
