(OTTAWA) Former prime minister Brian Mulroney is recovering from treatment in Montreal for prostate cancer, his family said Wednesday.

His daughter, Caroline Mulroney, said in a written statement that the family expects the former Tory leader’s condition to be “back to normal in the coming weeks.”

Citing an interview with one of Mr. Mulroney’s sons, Mark, the Toronto Star says in a report that treatment began last fall.

Mr. Mulroney, 84, served as Prime Minister of Canada from 1984 to 1993, as leader of the Progressive Conservatives.

During his tenure, he negotiated the first free trade agreement with the United States, which later became NAFTA.

Caroline Mulroney, who is currently Ontario’s Minister of Transportation and Francophone Affairs, said her family is heartened by the outpouring of support from across the country.
