According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning a visit to North Korea.

Putin has received an “invitation to an official visit to North Korea,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday. This is currently being prepared and a date will be announced “in due course”.

The West has imposed strict sanctions on both Russia and North Korea. Since the Russian offensive in Ukraine began in February 2022, the two countries have become closer. Pyongyang is accused by the West of supplying weapons to Moscow. 

According to South Korean intelligence, North Korea has supplied millions of artillery shells to support the Russian offensive and received food in return. Washington and Kiev accuse Russia of using ballistic missiles from North Korea in Ukraine. 

North Korea’s ruler Kim Jong Un visited Putin last year. The heads of state met in Russia’s Far East to strengthen their relations. Kim rarely travels abroad.
