Most recently, Chancellor Olaf Scholz sided with Finance Minister Christian Lindner in the budget dispute and reminded the ministers of the savings targets. Resistance to this is now growing in the SPD.

Unrest is growing in the SPD because of the austerity measures pursued by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP). “The SPD will definitely not go along with this austerity program,” said Bochum Bundestag member Axel Schäfer to “Stern”. “We have to defend ourselves against the constant taunts of the liberals. I would like the Chancellor to deliver a liberation.”

Economic politician Sebastian Roloff, a member of the SPD party executive, also criticized the austerity measures. “I’m slowly losing my imagination as to how one can set up a reasonable budget under the current circumstances,” said Roloff. He warned against cutting back on investments, integration measures and consulates, for example. “On the contrary: this country urgently needs investments.”
