At least 10 people were injured after an explosion destroyed a home in Calgary, the fire department said.

Firefighters say the force of the blast created a large debris field, multiple fires and damage to surrounding homes in a northeast neighborhood.

According to reports, officials believe the 10 injured were inside the house when it exploded.

Teams were unable to search the site and search for other victims due to structural issues.

Calgary Emergency Medical Services spokesman Adam Loria says all of those taken to hospital are adults.

It says six people are in life-threatening condition and four have been seriously injured.

Mr. Loria says there were no children affected and the blast hit a single-family home.

Electricity in the area has been cut and workers are trying to block the natural gas line.

Firefighters and police are on the scene trying to determine the cause of the explosion.
