Oh dear, oh yes, our chancellor and the Warburg Bank affair from his time in Hamburg – that’s not over yet. Not even after the meeting of the committee of inquiry. Everything that is right: Scholz knows that he cannot remember. But he can remember very well that there was no wrongdoing in the matter of cum-ex and the city’s waiver of tax payments from the bank.

So, how does that fit together now? Exactly. Hard to believe. It’s not just pure opposition work when CDU leader Friedrich Merz has his doubts about it. So not only.

Because anyone who knows Scholz will find it hard to believe that the then Finance Senator Peter Tschentscher could just do it. Or that Scholz only listened to the view of Christian Olearius, co-owner of Warburg Bank, in 2020.

Maybe. But Scholz has forgotten the rest? A suspicion is not the same as a suspicion. It is and remains a one-time event that the e-mail inbox of an incumbent Federal Chancellor is searched by the public prosecutor because of the e-mails from the time as Hamburg’s head of government.

And just because the Hamburg public prosecutor’s office isn’t investigating doesn’t mean that something else isn’t coming: the colleagues in Cologne are staying tuned.
