Tatian and Tatiana

the Name Tatiana comes to us from Ancient Rome. The Romans had female names, and male, there were less than two dozen. Women called by the name of all kinds (for example, every woman of the Julii was Julia, and Emilie — Emilia). Later, the names arose from nicknames, securing men of the family. Tatian (and a female version — Tatiana, Tatiana) means literally “derived from the Doing”, the generic name, which bore the character of early Roman legends — a contemporary of the founders of the city, Romulus and Remus, Saby king Titus Tatsiy. Etymology of the name is not clear. Sometimes it is translated as “the organizer”, but this is only in consonance with the Greek verb of “tatto” (cognate with the word “tactics”).

Saint Tatiana

on 25 January the Church celebrates the Holy Martyr Tatiana. According to the Christians preserved the tradition, she was born in the family of a noble Roman, and at the same time the secret of the Christian. For the sake of the Church’s Ministry Tatiana renounced her marriage and was made a Deaconess — then the eest could perform pastoral duties. This lady’s career was only possible in the hierarchy of the early Church. During the persecution of Christians under the Emperor Alexander Severus (222-235 ad) Tatiana was caught, and even under threat of torture by refusing to bring pagan sacrifices, showed many miracles. The legend says that after her prayers destroyed the pagan temples and statues, and she tamed a lion who was abandoned to be devoured.

“Her sister was called Natasha”

the Most famous Tatiana in Russian culture — certainly, the heroine of Pushkin’s “Eugene Onegin.” I guess a lot of people from school remember — the poet chose this “sweet” sounding “Greek name” that existed, however, only among the common people, to oppose the naturalness of her character, the affectation of an aristocratic world. A less known fact that in his early drafts Pushkin calls a girl… Natasha, it is quite usual for the era of the noble name, which the narrative injects “fearlessly”, and not as a finishing option like apologizing to the reader for the author’s “willfulness”.

the Romanovs

However, in the power of genius, — not to adapt to the tastes of the audience, and to change them. Roman Pushkin was always fashionable among the Russian aristocracy and, for example, influenced the choice of names for the older daughters of Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna. The king himself said that girls named Olga and Tatiana, that was, like Pushkin in “Eugene Onegin.” Like the literary prototype, the Grand Duchess Tatiana was, according to the memoirs of contemporaries, a sample of “sincerity, straightforwardness and perseverance, tendency to poetry and abstract ideas.” We add only that this name, quite uncharacteristic of the Romanovs, appears not only in the twilight of the dynasty, but at the time of its formation. Mikhail Fyodorovich, the first Romanov on the throne — surrounded by two Tatiana: early deceased sister named in memory of her daughter, who, having lived to a ripe old age, had respected her niece Sophia, and subsequently supported her, sharpened by Peter the great in the monastery
