The summer holidays are over, the football tournament of the year is also behind us. The European Women’s Soccer Championship in England was a rousing sporting event, so soccer fever and holiday feelings went together perfectly. I won’t be watching the men’s World Cup in Qatar, which is under a dictatorial rule and disregards human rights.

It would be great if the momentum of the EM tournament, the attendance records, the great games and the strong German team had a lasting effect on our local soccer players. Five clubs from Berlin are playing in the regional league this season. After all, this is the third highest division in Germany and still the highest in which Berlin clubs are currently playing.

The footballers of FC Viktoria 89 from Lichterfelde want to change that with new investors and their first goal is promotion to the second division. Türkiyemspor from Kreuzberg, who came second last year, is starting the season with similar ambitions, coached by the Hungarian international Erika Szuh.

And 1. FC Union also has big plans with the new coach Ailien Poese, who has come from the DFB, and the announcement that they will become more professional. In Köpenick, the importance of building a successful women’s team in the club was recognized more quickly than at Hertha BSC in Westend, where the relevant discussion is only just beginning.

The concentration in the southwest of Berlin is striking: in addition to Viktoria, Stern 1900 from Steglitz and newly promoted Hertha 03 Zehlendorf play in the regional league. For both of them, the main thing is to keep the class.

Maybe you have time and want to visit one or the other club with your family or friends. All regional league game dates can be found here at fupa.net, for example. Support your local soccer players!

The Tagesspiegel newsletter, which you can order here free of charge, recently celebrated its fifth anniversary and is available for all twelve Berlin districts, with more than 265,000 subscriptions. In it we inform you once a week in a bundled and compact way about what’s going on in your district. We also often let readers have their say in the newsletters, after all nobody knows Berlin’s neighborhoods as well as the people who live there.
