Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser spoke out in favor of more equality in the debate about the payment of women and men in football. It is important to her that politicians and players “send a clear signal” that women’s football “has the same importance as men’s football,” said the SPD politician, who is also responsible for sport, at the European Football Championship on ZDF.
“That also has consequences for the question of what the one player earns, what the other players earn. There needs to be more equality.”
It also remained unclear how better pay would be financed. The turnover of the European football union Uefa through TV rights, sponsorship and tickets for a European championship for men is significantly higher. This means that higher bonuses are paid out to the associations at men’s tournaments.
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently called for equal pay for women and men in sport – especially in national teams. DFB director Oliver Bierhoff then suggested a conversation with the SPD politician. “I’d like to invite him over. Then I’ll explain the numbers to him a little better,” he said. Scholz was ready for a conversation.
