The number of traffic accidents and people injured in them increased significantly in Berlin and Brandenburg in the first four months of 2022 compared to the same period last year.

As reported by the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office in Potsdam on Monday, the number of accidents recorded by the police on Berlin’s streets increased by 14.8 percent to 40,759. People were injured in 3602 accidents.

This corresponds to an increase of more than a third (34.8 percent). 625 people suffered serious (up 45.3 percent) and 3614 minor injuries (up 32.1 percent).

However, there were fewer fatalities: six people lost their lives. In the same period last year there were nine deaths.

In Brandenburg, the police registered 21,584 road traffic accidents nationwide in the first four months of the year. That was 5.9 percent more than in the same period last year.

In 2195 accidents in which people were injured, 542 suffered serious injuries (up 10.6 percent) and 2211 suffered minor injuries (up 27.1 percent).
