The lifeless body found in a residence in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is that of a 67-year-old woman, police confirmed late Sunday evening. She was allegedly the victim of murder.

A 43-year-old man was arrested at the scene on Sunday. He should appear tomorrow morning at the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu courthouse.

According to Sergeant Jérémie Lévesque, head of media relations, a call was first received at 911 around 9:15 a.m. At the end of the line, the caller asked the police to go to a residence on avenue des Pins, not far from rue Létourneau, in the Saint-Luc sector.

In the small white house surrounded by trees, they found the body of the victim, lifeless.

He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of his death.

“It sure saddens me. He was a very nice person, we saw each other often, ”testified a neighbor of the victim met on the spot.

To let the investigators do their work of collecting clues, a vast police perimeter was erected in the area. A portion of Avenue des Pins remained closed for much of the day on Sunday.

“Our forensic identification team is working with that of the Sûreté du Québec to reconstruct the crime scene,” said sergeant and head of media relations at the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu police department, Jérémy Lévesque.

Potential witnesses were to be met during the day.
