NYPD officers Wilbert Mora and Jason Rivera were killed by a domestic violence suspect after being shot.

NEW YORK CITY – On Friday, thousands flooded the streets around New York City‘s famous St. Patrick’s Cathedral to say goodbye to the fallen New York City Det. Jason Rivera was affectionately known as “Tata”.

The 22-year old fledgling officer was shot and murdered earlier this month by a suspect in domestic violence, according to police.
Just before the funeral, light snow started just before it was to begin at 9 a.m. For those who were unable to attend the funeral in person, the services will be streamed live. At 6 a.m., the New York Police Department ( NYPD) started closing streets around it – almost two blocks each –

The cathedral was surrounded by police cars that stretched for miles. In the moments leading up to the ceremony, music was playing.

Rivera’s wife Dominique Luzuriaga, who was unable to hold back tears during her time on the podium, said how she feels in “this nightmare I wish I never had”.

She continued, “Full and angry with anger, hurt, and sadness.” I know that you are looking at me, beside me, telling me that I can do it. I am trying. Trust me, I’m capable. However, I wasn’t prepared for it.”

Luzuriaga stated Rivera made her feel alive and that he would be happy to see everyone “through pain or sorrow.”

She said, “This is exactly the way he would want to be remembered as a true hero.” “You have the entire nation in gridlock. Even though you won’t physically be there, I want you live through me.”

She continued to state how the system “continues its failures.”

We are no longer safe. Luzuriaga stated that not even members of the service were safe. “I know that you are tired of these laws, especially those from the new D.A,” she said, possibly referring to Alvin Bragg, newly elected Manhattan District Attorney.

She continued, “I’m sure all our blue family members are tired too,” she said. “But I promise, that our death will not be without purpose. You are my love to the end.

Keechant Sewell, Police Commissioner, stated to the crowd that New York City is always been “a city full of lights”.

She said, “And Police Officer Jason Rivera had the most brilliant record.” Rivera was promoted to Detective First Grade after her death.

Jason met the woman and found the career of his dreams after only 22 years. Sewell stated that many people don’t achieve this in their lifetimes. Sewell said, “He was unbounded generosity and a humble man. He taught us how to do better. These selfless acts and humility were recalled over the past week.

Sewell said, “His loss was extremely difficult. It is difficult for us all to bear. Jason was up for any challenge. He was everything that the NYPD and the city needed.

Eric Adams, New York City Mayor, stated that “We as cities, states, and nations, we say thank you, Jason.” “Today, we are thinking of his family.”

A procession will follow the funeral down Fifth Avenue, from 49th Street towards 34th Street, and then continue on to Rivera’s final resting spot in Westchester, New York.

Two firetrucks will carry an American flag over the procession route at 43rd Street.

Rivera Mora (27), and Wilbert Moura (27), were shot while responding to a Harlem report about domestic violence involving a mother, Lashawn McNeil, and their adult son.

The officers met the woman along with a third officer and began to approach the bedroom back. McNeil informed them that McNeil was there. McNeil opened fire on Rivera and Mora as they approached. McNeil was critically injured when the third officer opened fire.

Rivera passed away Friday, shortly after the shooting.
Mora, who was shot to the head by a gun, died on Tuesday. Mora donated his organs, which were ultimately used to save five lives. Services are scheduled for February 1 and 2. They will also take place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
McNeil was alleged to have used a high capacity magazine and a pistol, both of which were later found to be stolen. McNeil died on Monday from his injuries.
