(Quebec) The Government of Quebec will pay an annual check of $300 to teachers to purchase Quebec books for their classes.
Education Minister Bernard Drainville made the announcement in Quebec on Tuesday morning.
This measure will cost the Quebec Treasury 55.6 million by 2027-2028, according to the government.
According to ministry figures, this equates to a total of 616,000 new books per year in primary school classrooms.
Québec thus wishes to promote the teaching of French in schools. Other measures in this direction are to be announced soon.
The government says it also wants the announcement to spark students’ interest in reading.
“And developing this interest is only possible if we make available as many quality books as possible to our students. This is what our government is doing,” Minister Drainville said in a statement.
