(Edmonton) Edmonton police say the two officers shot and killed Thursday by a 16-year-old boy had no indication they were about to intervene in a risky or dangerous situation.

Authorities said there was no sign the teen, who later killed himself by turning the gun on himself, was armed. Police had been called to the flat by the boy’s mother, who said she had been in trouble with her son.

The two police officers were shot several times before they could enter the apartment.

According to law enforcement, the youngster did not have a criminal record or an outstanding warrant for his arrest, but was known to police due to an earlier call about his mental health.

The boy also allegedly shot his mother as the two struggled for her gun. She is still in the hospital.
