At a music festival on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, the stage collapsed due to a storm and one person died.

The accident happened shortly after 4 a.m. at the electronic music festival “Medusa Circus of Madness” on Cullera Beach, about 50 kilometers south of the city of Valencia, the authorities said on Saturday.

“At 4:18 a.m., part of the stage (…) collapsed due to a strong gust of wind,” the rescue service said on Twitter. One person died, three others were seriously injured and 14 suffered minor injuries. The health authorities later reported 40 injuries.

According to media reports, the dead man is a man in his early 20s who was hit by parts of the stage when it collapsed.

Around 320,000 visitors were expected at the festival. Video footage posted online showed strong winds sweeping across the site, trees bending dangerously and people trying to save their tents and belongings. According to the organizers, the festival site was cleared “to ensure the safety of festival visitors, employees and artists”.
