(New York) At least one person died and five were injured in a partial collapse of a parking lot in lower Manhattan on Tuesday, New York authorities said.

“There were six workers in the building when it collapsed. Four of them have been hospitalized and are in stable condition. One person died and one person refused treatment,” John Esposito, a New York Fire Department official, said at a press conference.

Footage circulating on social media showed overturned cars and smoke billowing from the collapsed building.

The structure is “unstable,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who said operations were underway to find other possible victims among the rubble.

The multi-story parking lot collapsed on itself, “all the way to the basement,” a city official added.

The authorities notably specified that they were using drones and a robot dog to prevent rescuers from entering this building, the other part of which could always collapse.
