The Democratic Party (PD), Italy’s largest centre-left party, is also joining forces with leftists and greens ahead of the autumn general election.

PD leader Enrico Letta announced the alliance on Saturday at a joint press conference with representatives of the Italian Left (SI) and Europa Verde.

On Tuesday, the PD had already allied with a smaller center party to prevent the centre-right coalition from winning a majority in September’s parliamentary elections.

A statement distributed on Tuesday said the DP and the Azione party wanted to stick to the foreign policy of the resigning Prime Minister Mario Draghi and continue to support Ukraine.

The early parliamentary elections were called after Italian President Sergio Mattarella dissolved parliament after Draghi’s resignation on July 21; it is expected to take place on September 25th.
