After the knife attack in a regional train near Aachen, the investigators are examining an Islamist background. This was announced by NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) on Friday. The perpetrator is a 31-year-old man who was born in Iraq.

The man stabbed travelers with a knife on the train on Friday morning, according to Reul, a total of six people were injured.

The attacker stabbed passengers “indiscriminately and arbitrarily” and the victim and perpetrator were unrelated, Reul said on Friday. The victims suffered lacerations, one a stab wound. Four travelers were taken to a hospital, their lives were not in danger.

It was “a cruel act that could be stopped in an act of enormous courage,” the minister said. Accordingly, the perpetrator had been overpowered by a federal police officer and two other passengers.
