She is probably one of the most famous artists participating in the Documenta Fifteen. According to reports from “Zeit Online”, the Berlin media artist Hito Steyerl has now withdrawn her contribution to the world art show.
Her film “Animal Spirits” is on display in Kassel’s Ottoneum as part of a presentation by the art collective “Inland”. Hito Steyerl calls on the Documenta to dismantle the work. She too has lost trust in those responsible for Documenta, just like Meron Mendel before her. The head of the Anne Frank educational institution was supposed to help assess the Documenta works for other possible anti-Jewish content, but withdrew when none of the curators and organizers took any action.
“I will no longer be involved in documenta fifteen,” wrote the artist Hito Steyerl in an email in English to the organizers of the exhibition, which is available to “Zeit Online”. “I have no confidence in the ability of the organization , to convey and to translate complexity. This refers to the repeated refusal to facilitate a sustained and structurally anchored inclusive debate around the exhibition, as well as the factual refusal to accept mediation.”
