In the words of US President Joe Biden, the congressional elections in November are about “saving democracy”. During a campaign appearance in Rockville near Washington, Biden sharply attacked former President Donald Trump’s opposition Republicans on Thursday, describing them as a party full of “anger, violence, hatred and division”.

The Democrats, on the other hand, stand for the “future” and for “unity, hope and optimism”.

In the November election, people would have “a choice between these two visions,” Biden said in a speech to hundreds of supporters. He appealed to his compatriots to go to the polls “to literally save democracy once more”.

Before his speech, Biden had branded supporters of Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” and thus the right-wing Republican party as “extreme”. “It’s not just Trump, it’s the entire philosophy. (…) It’s like half fascism,” said Biden.

November’s midterm congressional elections are about halfway through Biden’s term. Observers had previously assumed that the Democrats would lose their majorities in the Senate and House of Representatives to the Republicans. Several domestic political successes, such as a climate and social package put into effect by Biden in mid-August, have recently given Biden and his party hope again. (AFP)
