Climate protection demonstrators have continued their sit-ins on the streets of Berlin. Once again on Tuesday morning, members of the “Last Generation” group sat down on the roadway in several places near the motorway exits in the Berlin city area, some sticking their hands to the asphalt. The police were on duty. Traffic jams formed on several sections of the motorway during rush hour.

According to the police, a total of almost 40 activists took part. According to the traffic information center (VIZ), there was initially a blockade near Kurt-Schuhmacher-Damm in Reinickendorf with a 30-minute traffic jam for drivers. An ambulance with a patient had to turn around and find another way past the traffic jam, a police spokeswoman said.

A long backlog formed on the Autobahn in Pankow because the demonstrators blocked the Prenzlauer Promenade. Further actions took place on Schloßstrasse in Steglitz and on Gradestrasse in Neukölln. The Last Generation group tweeted that “the few minutes delay” was “a joke (…) compared to the restrictions we all face because of climate change”.

Berlin’s Senator for the Interior, Iris Spranger (SPD), had recently announced tougher action on several occasions. The police union (GdP) complained: “Our capital is currently an absolute feel-good biotope for road blockers. You can set an example politically or finally pay attention to the dwindling tolerance among those who stand in traffic jams for hours on their way to work in hospitals, factories and companies.”

The renewed blockades in Berlin by the activists of the “last generation” are currently in their third week.
