Popular short-video Chinese program TikTok is cutting its workforce from India after countless millions of its customers dropped it to comply with a government ban on heaps of Chinese programs amid a military standoff between both nations.

“Given the absence of comments from the authorities about ways to solve this dilemma in the following seven weeks, it’s with profound sadness that we’ve opted to lower our work force in India,” a TikTok announcement said Wednesday.

The announcement did not give specifics, but media reports say that the company has over 2,000 workers in India. It voiced the hope it will find an opportunity to relaunch TikTok from India to encourage countless millions of consumers, artists, storytellers, teachers and actors.

The Indian government announced a ban on 59 native programs, such as TikTok, which can be controlled by Chinese online company Bytedance, in June because its connections with China deteriorated.

Gao did not address Indian complaints which Chinese programs may be a safety hazard but said Beijing needs its employers to abide by local laws overseas.

“The hard-won growth of China-India trade and economic cooperation is in the common interests of both individuals,” Gao said.

Beijing expects New Delhi can”offer an open, just and non-discriminatory small business environment” for Chinese firms”to ensure China-India bilateral trade and economic cooperation can be back on track as soon as you can,” Gao said.

Chinese-owned programs have located a fast-growing marketplace in India, with a few businesses producing India-specific programs which have exploded in popularity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has used the nation’s 500 million net users — next only to China — as a bait for tech giants such as Twitter to localize Indians’ data.
