After the major fire in Berlin’s Grunewald at the beginning of August, the Avus is to be closed again on Wednesday. This was announced by the Berlin Traffic Information Center (VIZ) and the police. Accordingly, “an unscheduled large-scale blast to destroy ammunition” takes place at the Grunewald blast site. The S-Bahn is also affected by the closure.
Several explosions occurred in connection with the fire, which broke out on August 4 for reasons that have not yet been clarified.
Individual explosives are said to have been thrown around as a result, four bombs are said to be “no longer safe to handle” and are therefore to be destroyed immediately – ie controlled detonations.
The blasting is planned for 1 p.m., but the measures should already begin at 6 a.m. The security zone around the blasting site will be expanded for this measure, and the Avus between Kreuz Funkturm and Kreuz Zehlendorf will be closed – from 7.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Hüttenweg junction and its crossing point, which are currently closed, are also affected, as is the Spanish Allee junction in the north direction – but the route remains passable in the south direction.
The Havelchaussee should also remain closed on Wednesday, the Kronprinzessinnenweg is anyway closed until the end of September, the VIZ announced. The S-Bahn is also interrupted: Line S7 does not run between Grunewald and Wannsee stations between 7.30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
