After several weeks of searching, the police in Brandenburg near the Polish border caught a suspected murderer. The 36-year-old was arrested in Brieskow-Finkenheerd on Thursday evening, as the Detmold public prosecutor and the Bielefeld police announced on Friday.

He is said to have killed a 39-year-old man in his sleep with an ax about five weeks ago in Kalletal, North Rhine-Westphalia, and then raped his former girlfriend.

According to the investigation, the suspect broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in Kalletal on the night of June 18 and hit the victim on the head with an axe. The 39-year-old died immediately as a result of the blow.

During a traffic check in Rinteln the following morning, the alleged perpetrator fled on foot. His 24-year-old ex-girlfriend, who was sitting in the car, then reported the crime to the officers. The investigators assume jealousy as a motive.

The fugitive was searched for weeks with an international arrest warrant, including posters at rest stops and parking lots on the A2 as well as leaflets for truck drivers and car drivers. The Detmold public prosecutor’s office also offered a 5,000 euro reward for information leading to the capture of Elchin A.
