(Edmonton) The families of the two Edmonton police officers shot dead this week will both receive $100,000 from the Alberta Heroes Fund, Premier Danielle Smith announced.

Ms. Smith made the announcement during her weekly radio show during which she addressed the issue of the deaths of officers Brett Ryan and Travis Jordan.

The police were killed by a teenager who then committed suicide, while they intervened in a building on a case of non-violent domestic dispute.

Smith said the Alberta Heroes Fund was created in 2020 and the money will help families deal with the “costs associated with dealing with this horrific tragedy.”

The fund was set up as part of the Safety and Red Tape Reduction Act 2020 and the government’s website says it aims to recognize the sacrifices of first responders who die in the line of duty.

Smith also encouraged people to donate to police families through GoFundMe, a fundraiser set up by the Edmonton Police Foundation.
